Tina Turner – Early life

Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock, the youngest daughter of Zelma Priscilla and Floyd Richard Bullock, on November 26, 1939, in Brownsville, Tennessee. Her father worked as an overseer of the sharecroppers at Poindexter Farm on Highway 180, where the family lived in the surrounding rural unincorporated village of Nutbush, Tennessee; she subsequently recounted picking cotton with her family as a child.

Turner had previously thought she had a lot of Native American blood in her veins.

Evelyn Juanita Currie and Ruby Alline Bullock were Bullock’s older sisters. Eugene Bridges’ first cousin once removed is also her. When their parents moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, to work at a defense facility during World War II, the three sisters were separated as kids.

Bullock went to live with her strict, pious paternal grandparents, Alex and Roxanna Bullock, who were pastors and deaconesses at the Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church, respectively. The sisters reunited with their parents after the war and relocated to Knoxville with them.

Bullock sang in the church choir at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Nutbush as a child. Her mother Zelma ran away from her terrible relationship with Floyd when she was 11 years old, going to St. Louis in 1950. Her father married another lady and moved to Detroit in 1952, two years after her mother left the family.

Bullock and her sisters were moved to Brownsville, Tennessee, to live with their maternal grandmother, Georgeanna Currie.

The family moved back to Nutbush two years later, to the Flagg Grove neighborhood, where Bullock attended Flagg Grove Elementary School from first to eighth grade.

Tina Turner – Personal life

Turner (then Ann Bullock) fell in love for the first time with Harry Taylor while still in Brownsville. At a high school basketball game, they met. Taylor went to a separate school at first but later moved closer to her.

“Harry was super successful and had dozens of girlfriends,” she told Rolling Stone in 1986, “but eventually I got him, and we went steady for a year.”

When she found out that Taylor had married another female he had pregnant, their relationship ended.

Bullock and her sister Alline were acquainted with Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm after moving to St. Louis. Bullock began dating saxophonist Raymond Hill, while Alline was dating the band’s drummer Eugene Washington.

She moved in with Hill, who resided with Ike Turner, after becoming pregnant during her final year of high school. She chatted: “I didn’t care for him as much as I cared for Harry. He was, however, attractive. ‘My baby is going to be gorgeous,’ I thought.” Hill fractured his ankle in a wrestling battle with Kings of Rhythm singer Carlson Oliver, and their relationship came to an end.

Before their son Craig was born in August 1958, Hill left for his hometown of Clarksdale, leaving Bullock as a single parent.
