Ghislaine Maxwell was born on December 25, 1961. She worked for her father, publishing tycoon  Robert Maxwell until he died in 1991.

when she relocated to the United States and became good friends with Epstein. In 2012, Maxwell launched The TerraMar Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to ocean conservation. The organization declared its closure on July 12, 2019, a week after federal authorities in New York said Epstein had been charged with sex trafficking.

Maxwell was charged with the crimes of enticement of minors and sex trafficking of young girls by the US federal government in 2020. On July 10, 2020, the US Virgin Islands Department of Justice revealed that Maxwell was being investigated in the Caribbean territory.

Ghislaine Maxwell – Early Life

Ghislaine Maxwell was born in 1961 in Maisons-Laffitte, France, to Elisabeth, a French-born scholar, and Robert Maxwell, a Czechoslovak-born British media mogul. Her father was born into a Jewish household, while her mother was a Huguenot.

Maxwell was born two days before her 15-year-old brother Michael was killed in a car accident, leaving him in a coma for the rest of his life. Ghislaine’s mother later remarked on the accident’s impact on the entire family, speculating that Ghislaine had displayed signs of anorexia as a youngster.

Ghislaine spent her childhood in Oxford, where she lived with her family at Headington Hill Hall, a 53-room mansion that also housed the offices of Pergamon Press, a publishing house run by Robert Maxwell. Her mother stated that she raised all of her children as Anglicans. Maxwell went to Oxford’s Marlborough College and Balliol College.

Maxwell and her father had a tight relationship, and she was widely regarded as her father’s favorite. Maxwell told Tatler that her father built computers at Headington in 1973, and her first job was learning how to use a Wang and eventually programming code. According to the New York Times, he forbade Ghislaine from bringing her lovers home or being seen with them in public after she began attending Oxford University.

Ghislaine Maxwell – Career

In the 1980s, Maxwell was a well-known figure in the London social scene. She started a women’s group called the Kit-Cat Club, which was named after the original Kit-Cat Club. During her father’s ownership of Oxford United Football Club, she was a director. She also worked at The European, a journal founded by Robert Maxwell.

According to Tom Bower of The Sunday Times, Robert invited her to the christening of his new yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, in her honor at a shipyard in the Netherlands, in 1986. In the late 1980s, Maxwell spent a lot of time onboard the yacht, which had a Jacuzzi, sauna, gym, and disco. Robert Maxwell had apparently “tailor-made a New York corporation for her,” according to the Scotsman. The business, which dealt in corporate gifts, was losing money.

According to the Sunday Times, Maxwell traveled to New York on November 5, 1990, to deliver an envelope on her father’s behalf that was part of “a scheme begun by her father to steal $200 million” from Berlitz shareholders, which she was unaware of. The Lady Ghislaine was once known as the Dancing Hare yacht.

Maxwell’s father dispatched her to New York City to function as his emissary after he purchased the New York Daily News in January 1991. Maxwell and her father traveled Concorde to New York on business in May 1991, where he swiftly left for Moscow and left her to represent his interests at a Simon Wiesenthal tribute gathering.

Robert Maxwell’s body was discovered floating in the sea near the Canary Islands and the Lady Ghislaine in November 1991. Ghislaine traveled to Tenerife, where the yacht was berthed, shortly after to take care of his business papers.

Ghislaine attended her father’s funeral in Jerusalem with several Israeli intelligence officials, President Chaim Herzog, and Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, who delivered the eulogy. Although her father’s death was ruled an accident, Maxwell has since stated that she believes he was killed, saying in 1997, “He did not take his own life. That was simply not in keeping with his personality.

I believe he was assassinated.” Robert Maxwell was discovered to have fraudulently plundered the pension funds of Mirror Group Newspapers, a firm he founded and owned a substantial stake in, to prop up its stock price after his death.

It was reported that around £440 million in pension funds had gone missing, putting the remaining Maxwell family members and the British government in a difficult position to reimburse the 32,000 people who had been affected. On June 19, 1992, two of Maxwell’s brothers, Ian and Kevin, were arrested and charged with fraud in connection with the Mirror Group pension controversy.

They were the most active with their father in everyday business activities. Three and a half years later, in January 1996, the brothers were cleared of the allegations. Maxwell relocated to the United States shortly after her father died in 1991. Due to the hefty expense of the travel, she was photographed boarding a Concorde to cross the Atlantic, generating anger amid the pension crisis.

Maxwell had an annual income of £80,000 thanks to a trust fund set up by her father in Liechtenstein. By 1992, she had relocated to an apartment in Central Park owned by an Iranian friend. Maxwell was working at a real estate firm on Madison Avenue at the time and was said to be socializing with celebrities. She swiftly rose to popularity as a socialite in New York City.

Ghislaine Maxwell – Personal Life

Maxwell has been a resident of Belgravia, London, since at least 1997. Maxwell moved into a 7,000-square-foot (650-square-meter) home on East 65th Street in New York City in 2000, just a few blocks from Epstein’s estate.

An unidentified limited liability company with an address that matches J. Epstein & Co. purchased Maxwell’s townhouse for $4.95 million. Epstein’s longtime lawyer, Darren Indyke, represented the buyer. Her New York townhouse, where she had lived, was sold for $15 million in April 2016.

Maxwell was intimately linked to Ted Waitt, the founder of Gateway computers, for several years after her personal and professional engagement with Epstein. As a guest of Waitt, she attended Chelsea Clinton’s wedding in 2010.

Before their relationship ended in late 2010or early 2011, Maxwell assisted Waitt in obtaining and renovating a luxury boat, the Plan B, which they used for travel to France and Croatia.

On August 15, 2019, reports surfaced that Maxwell had been living in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, in the home of Scott Borgerson, who stepped down as CEO of CargoMetrics, a hedge fund investment company specializing in maritime data analytics, in October 2020 as a result of the publicity surrounding Maxwell.

Maxwell and Borgerson were said to have been romantically together for a long time. Locals in Manchester-by-the-Sea reported Maxwell kept a low profile, going by “G” instead of her full first name, and strolling a Vizsla dog along the beach on multiple occasions.

During a litigation dispute with neighbors over canceled access rights to the larger Sharksmouth Estate in 2019, Borgerson and Maxwell filed documents in Massachusetts Land Court about Borgerson’s property, known as Pippin House.

Maxwell and Borgerson were living together at the house in question, according to a neighboring property manager. Others have claimed to have spotted them running together in the mornings on several occasions. In August 2019, Borgerson reported that Maxwell was no longer residing at the house and that he had no idea where she was.

“The Post spotted the socialite hidden in plain sight in the least likely place imaginable — a fast-food joint in Los Angeles,” according to the New York Post, which released images of Maxwell dining at a fast-food restaurant in Los Angeles on August 15. The photos were later revealed to have been taken during a meeting with Maxwell’s friend and attorney, Leah Saffian, who also provided the Daily Mail with more photos.

Ghislaine Maxwell relationship with Jeffrey Epstein

When Maxwell first met American businessman Jeffrey Epstein, accounts differ. Robert Maxwell introduced his daughter to Epstein in the late 1980s, according to Epstein’s old business colleague Steven Hoffenberg.

According to the New York Times, Maxwell met Epstein in the early 1990s at a New York party after “a painful break-up with CIGA Hotels Count Gianfranco Cicogna Mozzoni” (1962–2012).

In the early 1990s, Maxwell had a love relationship with Epstein for several years and remained close to him for decades.
It’s unclear what their connection is like. Starting approximately 1992, several of Epstein’s domestic employees said in a 2009 deposition that Epstein referred to her as his “primary girlfriend,” who also hired, fired, and oversaw his staff.

Epstein’s workers have referred to her as the “Lady of the House” and his “aggressive assistant.” Author Vicky Ward wrote in a 2003 Vanity Fair piece on Epstein that he referred to Maxwell as “my best friend.” Maxwell seemed to “arrange much of his life,” according to Ward.

Epstein renamed one of his firms the Ghislaine Corporation in 1995; the company was based in Palm Beach, Florida, and folded in 1998.  Maxwell also carried Epstein to his private Caribbean island as a skilled helicopter pilot.

Epstein was convicted of recruiting a juvenile for prostitution in 2008 and was sentenced to 13 months in prison out of an 18-month sentence. Maxwell continued to attend significant social occasions after Epstein’s release, but she and Epstein were never longer seen together publicly. Maxwell had generally stopped attending social events by late 2015.

Dispute over the release of court documents

The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ordered the unsealing of records from Virginia Giuffre’s previous civil complaint against Maxwell on July 2, 2019. Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on sex trafficking and sex trafficking conspiracy charges at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on July 6, 2019.

On July 17, 2019, Maxwell filed a review in a federal appeals court in an attempt to keep records sealed that were part of litigation brought by Giuffre.

The first batch of documents from Giuffre’s earlier defamation suit against Maxwell was unsealed and revealed on August 9, 2019. Epstein was discovered dead in his Manhattan prison cell on August 10, 2019, after allegedly hanging himself. In December 2019, Maxwell and her lawyers continued to argue against the publication of more court records.

The FBI was investigating Maxwell for assisting Epstein’s criminal operations, according to Reuters on December 27, 2019. On July 30, 2020, further records from the Giuffre v. Maxwell defamation case were made public. A deposition given by Giuffre was included in the documents, as well as more recent email exchanges between Maxwell and Epstein, with some of the contact dating back to 2015.

Arrest in July 2020

Maxwell has long been accused of obtaining and sexually trafficking minor girls for Epstein and others, allegations she denies. On July 2, 2020, the FBI detained Maxwell in Bradford, New Hampshire, using an IMSI-catcher (“stingray”) mobile phone monitoring device on a phone she used to call one of her lawyers, Scott Borgerson, her husband, and Isabel, her sister

Ghislaine Maxwell worked for her father, publishing tycoon  Robert Maxwell until he died in 1991 when she relocated to the United States and became good friends with Epstein. In late 2019, Maxwell relocated to a distant 156-acre (63 ha) home in Bradford, New Hampshire, where she utilized former British military soldiers as personal security until her arrest in July 2020.

Federal prosecutors indicated that Maxwell was married at the time of her arraignment, but she would not reveal the identity of her spouse (or their respective finances). It was revealed in December 2020 that she had married Borgerson in 2016.
